Kite Launch Culminating Task

Students were presented with the following challenge ;o)
You have been invited to take part in the celebrations of Canadian Contributions to Flight at Downsview Parks’, Air and Space Museum by designing a kite. Your kite design package must incorporate properties of air and principles of flight that will make the launch of your flying device successful. The most effective and well designed kite will be used as the postcard picture to mark this historic event.

Visit the Kite Blog a find out how everyone did. Enjoy :o)

  1. It was a great task to preform. My group made a box kite. Our idea was for it to look like a fish. The materials
werestaws, string, plastic, glue, and glitter. It wasn't easy to get the kite off the ground but it was fun making it. Dan Yang

  2. Everyone put all their effort into their kite to build it. Unfortunately, some kites didn’t fly but everyone still had a great time. I think if we did the kite launch again I think that most of the kite would fly because from experience. I hope everyone enjoyed the kite launch as much as I did. Alejandra

  4. Flying the kites was a lot of fun. Even though our kite didn't fly this was a very educational experience. We learned about the four forces of flight and about different types of kites. Some different types of kites we learned about were: Bow Kites, Dragon Kites and Stunt Kites. From my prior knowledge I think that if we had a windier, warmer day more of our kites would have gotten up. I really enjoyed this and I hope that other classes will have a chance to experience it.  Sophie =]

  5. It was an excellent task for us to build the kites. My group had a great time building a diamond kite. It was even more fun launching the kites into the air because we were surprised at which kites did fly and which ones did not. Bobbie

  6. I missed the time to build the kites with the rest of my group. I was there for the planning activities and discussions. I really enjoyed watching the kites fly, it was fun. We all had our laughs as some kites did fly better than others. I had a great time. Fallona

  7. Even though my group's kite didn't fly on the day of the launch, we put a lot of work into it and if there was more wind and we tweaked the design slightly it probably would have flown. Making a winged box kite was harder than we expected and the fish idea made it even more frustrating because we had a certain shape that we had to stick to. The whole experience was awesome though and I really enjoyed it! Keiko

  8. This was one of the most amazing projects I have ever done! I really enjoyed the chance to make the kites because we did not only use one person's ideas we used the whole group's ideas. I hope the kids next year will get the same opportunity that we got this year.
